Genting SkyWorlds (Genting Highlands, Malaysia) has soft-opened a brand new dark ride. Invasion of the Planet of the Apes is a trackless dark ride that is based on the Planet of the Apes film franchise. The park did not announce the opening and even indicated earlier this year that the addition would not be opening until February of 2023. Video footage and photos of the ride in operation have however been posted on ThemeParkX.
Genting SkyWorlds itself only soft-opened earlier this year. The park, originally called Genting Theme Park, was closed during a period 8 years for reconstruction. It was originally set to reopen as ’20th Century Fox World’, themed after the movies of 20th Century Fox. However due to licensing issues, the park had to find a new name. Many of the movie-based attractions could be kept however, resulting in most of the rides of Genting SkyWorlds featuring a movie theme.
The park opened with three DRdb-listed attractions: Night at the Museum Midnight Mayhem (interactive dark ride), Independence Day: Defiance (flying theatre) and Epic Voyage to Moonhaven (semi-dark ride boat ride). A second dark ride, Ice Age: Expedition Thin Ice opened in September.
With the opening of Invasion of the Planet of the Apes, Genting SkyWorld has opened the last of its originally planned dark rides. However, there is a SFX Coaster by Dynamic Attractions scheduled to open in 2023. Although no specific details have been given yet, due to the nature of the SFX coaster type, it is reasonable to assume it will qualify as a semi-dark ride.
