On January 6th of 2020 Snow White’s Scary Adventures, one of the oldest rides of Disneyland (Anaheim, CA) closed for a major upgrade. The classic Fantasyland dark ride will soon reopen as Snow White’s Enchanted Wish. This week the park officially reveiled a couple of the renewed scenes of the ride.

The ‘Snow White’s and her Adventures’ dark ride is among the oldest rides in the park, opening with the park on July 17th, 1955 with a ride system built by Arrow Dynamics. It was based on Walt Disney’s oldest feature animation film ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’. The Fantasyland theme zone, including the Snow White dark ride, received an update in 1983 and the ride was renamed to Snow White’s Scary Adventures.

For the new 2020-version, ‘Snow White’s Enchanted Wish’, both the exterior and interior received several updates. The exterior was painted from gray to a combination of bright colors. Even though the nature of the ride remained the same, a lot of scenes received changes.

During the Snow White dark ride, the introduction of the main character was improved. “We thought it was really important to introduce her early on. So we have a dancing Snow White character that actually now dances with Dopey and the interaction between them as you move through the cottage is really kind of almost cinematic”, tells concept designer John Gritz in a video on Disney Parks.

The mine scene that follows the cottage scene now features many jewels with various light effects. A new animatronic of Dopey with jewels in his eyes was added for a comic effect, along with animation screens of the dwarfs, working in the mine.

A new scene was added to the conclusion of the ride. The old version ended quite abruptly after the witch poisoned Snow White with an apple. The new version contains the scene where the prince kisses Snow White back to life. “We’re finally giving Snow White the happily ever after that she deserves”, says John Gritz.

Disneyland is currently closed due to the outbreak of COVID-19. It is not sure when Snow White’s Enchanted Wish will open to the public.
