Description
Alton Towers is located on an estate around a castle, the Towers. Hex was built in the west wing of the castle. The queue area and pre-shows are located inside the old castle, the main show was built in a new building next to the castle.
The story of Hex is based on an existing legend about the Earl of Shrewsbury, who lived in the Alton Towers castle in the 18th century. Legend says that he was cursed by an old beggarwomen, which caused one of his relatives to die every time a branch fell of the old oak tree near the estate. To prevent this, the earl chained all branches of the oak.
The full name of the ride is "Hex - The Legend of the Towers"
History
The attraction opened in March 2000 in a different iteration. This included a different preshow video, voiceover and show in the Octagon, however the Vault (madhouse) remained the same.
The change to the best known version of the attraction was carried out for the summer season in response to negative feedback, with new media produced by JWT.
In 2016, the ride received minor AV updates after a period of closure. In 2024, the attraction will reopen after a minor revamp after another extended period of closure.
