Description
Guests would enter the Galaxy building featuring a themed queue with animatronics and multiple preshows, after which they would board one of the simulators. The film took them on a journey trough space to visit a fictional theme park but would end up involved in saving an asteroid colony. The movie was projected onto giant screens (IMAX HD DOME), at the time the largest in the world, one for each side of the golden geodesic dome seen from outside the ride. Both sides were home to 8 simulators each, making for 16 in total. The ride had many sponsors including Milky Way and LTU, and featured an alien mascot called Alex from Galax.
History
Phantasialand originally wanted to secure the rights to reproduce Back to the Future: The Ride from Universal. Universal did not agree to this which prompted the park to develop a new, state of the art simulator ride themselves. The film (known as Asteroid Adventure) was developed specially for the park and was filmed with miniatures which took two months to construct. It was shot on 70mm film at 48 frames per second and cost a total of $1,5 million to produce.
Of the 16 simulator, 8 were on an upper floor, which was made inaccessible following the events of the disastrous Phantasialand fire of 2001 due to a lack of emergency exits. Originally, guests would exit the ride through a gift shop. This shop was later changed into an arcade. Around this time, the queue was reduced and supplemented with old animatronics taken from the defunct Space Center rollercoaster. After the 2005 season, Galaxy was rethemed to Race for Atlantis.
