Description
The Alt Wiener Grottenbahn takes its passengers along scenes depicting famous fairy tales and other miscellaneous fantasy scenes. Via a switch track the station is cut off the first time around, making the train go around the scenes twice. After riding, children get to pick out an old school toy like a bouncing ball.
"Alt Wiener Grottenbahn" is German for "Old Vienna Cave Tour".
It costs €3,50 to ride.
History
Along with the Silberbergwerk Grottenbahn, which is also in Wiener Prater, this ride is one of the few remaining rides of the classic dark ride type 'Grottenbahn'.
The Alt Wiener Grottenbahn, or at least an earlier incarnation of it, is believed to be have been the first Grottenbahn. According to the official Wiener Prater website, it opened in 1898. The current version however, as stated at the ticket kiosk, dates from 1951.
