Description
Herzogschaukel is one of the of the oldest still operating Haunted Swings in Europe. It is located in the "Märchengarten" (Fairy Tales Garden), adjacent to the 18th century Ludwigsburg Palace.
It is one of the only Haunted Swings which doesn't give its illusion away from the outside. A ''real'' (static) building has been built over the rotating drum to hide it from view. The inside of the drum is brightly lit and painted white, with some basic furniture in the form of reliefs on the walls. The floor, meanwhile, has a checker-board pattern. The swing offers room for about 40 guests and they sit on 3 levels on each side. Before the ride can start, the swing has to be in absolute balance, with the same amount of guests sitting on each side.
Herzogschaukel is German for "Duke's Swing".
History
The story goes that the duke who lived in the palace at the time designed the attraction himself. It was then constructed in-house. Originally, the entire mechanism was operated manually but nowadays, the braking of the swing is an automatised process. The original braking mechanism of the swing is still present inside the building.
