Description
The Gyrotron was a dark ride that took primarily place in a large, metal pyramid. Riders would board 3-person seats that could spin around to face different scenes. The inside of the futuristic building depicted a voyage through space while the vehicles headed up a spiral lift. At the top, the vehicles would go outside and cross over a bridge to enter a red structure. Inside, riders would descend vertically inside a narrow shaft resembling a volcano, before being swallowed up by a mechanical monster.
History
The Gyrotron was supposed to be the main attraction of the world's fair Expo 67 amusement section, which still operates today as La Ronde. It was the most expensive project of the expo and was designed by theatre designer Sean Kenny.
Despite the innovative nature of the ride, it failed to gain popularity and was closed in 1978. It stood SBNO until 1984 when it was demolished alongside Montagnes Russes (Schwarzkopf Wildcat) to make way for the wooden roller coaster Monstre.
