Description
Great Pirates was a free flow boat ride in the theme of pirates and one of the earliest to follow in the wake of Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean.
History
Great Pirates was located in Yokohama Dreamland, a sister park to Nara Dreamland which was heavily inspired by Disneyland and was at one point even going to be an official Disney park. Even though the contract with Disney did not go through, the park moved forward without the license and continued designing their own rides.
Great Pirates was Yokohama Dreamland's answer to Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean and was originally designed for Nara Dreamland.
Yokohama Dreamland closed its doors in 2002 due to a drop in attendance, a problem the park had been coping with since the opening of Tokyo Disneyland. Soon after, also Nara Dreamland would close its doors in 2006. The ride was left abandoned until it was eventually demolished. Before the demolition, urbexer Kurihara went inside and captured images of the ride in disrepair, and published them on YouTube.
