Katmandu Park Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic has ceased operations of its attractions. The park announced its closure last week, after only a year of operation. The park was operated by Falcon’s Beyond Destinations and contained a motion-based dark ride and two unique show rides.
Katmandu Park Punta Cana opened on March 15th of last year. The park was developed by Falcon’s Creative Group and conceived by a joint venture between Falcon’s Beyond Destinations and Meliá Hotels International, who also operate a nearby holiday resort.
The first theme park in the Dominican Republic was closed due to low attendence of the park and, according to Falcon’s Beyond, a shift in company strategy. The immediate closure of the park’s attractions was announced on March 7th of this year on the park’s website. The shops and a restaurants of the park remain open for the time being.
The park contained three DRdb listed attractions: Challenge of the Mad Mage, which was an installation of Falcon’s Creative’s own interactive theatre, On!x Theater, the Flying theatre Voyage of the Phantom Wanderer and motion-based dark ride Legend of the Disiratra. The latter two featured a ride system by Oceaneering Entertainment Systems.
A total of $83 million was invested to create Katmandu Park Punta Cana. Inspiration for the park came from Katmandu Park in Mallorca (Spain), which is also operated by Falcon’s Beyond Destinations (and remains in open). Falcon’s Beyond Global has stated it will be considering the future of the property.
