This year marks the opening of Jungle Expedition: De Vervloekte Schat (The Cursed Treasure) in the Dutch theme park Avonturenpark Hellendoorn. The ride is a refurbishment of the Jungle Monster.
For many years, Avonturenpark Hellendoorn has had a boat ride, called Jungle Monster, that passed through several outdoor scenes. The ride’s climax was an indoor scene where riders encountered a huge monster. For the 2020 season, the Jungle Monster got a refurbishment. Boats gained a new on board sound system, the scenes outside were renovated and restored and the indoor scene was completely redecorated. What used to be a single scene is now split up into three different scenes, telling a different part of the story.
With only one scene that was indoors, the old Jungle Monster ride did not qualify for an entry as semi-dark ride in the Dark Ride database. However, by splitting up the scene and adding more effects, the newly opened Jungle Expedition does qualify as an entry as a Semi-Dark Ride. That makes it the second entry for the park, which also includes the interactive dark ride Discovery Club.
Jungle Expedition opened in 1979 as Junglevaart. The boat ride system was made by Mack Rides. Avonturenpark Hellendoorn opened this season on May 21st after an extended winter closure due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Europe.
