Description
Geisterschloss is one of the oldest dark rides at Wiener Prater, opening in 1955. It is a classic ghost train spanning 2 floors. A short portion of the ride is traversed in daylight. The exterior resembles a castle with many creepy figures on it. Notable is a large gorilla at the right hand side, which entices guests to come in.
"Geisterschloss" is German for "Haunted Castle".
It costs €3,50 to ride.
History
This Geisterschloss opened in 1955, to replace the original Geisterschloss from 1933 which was destroyed in World War II. It used to belong to Friedrich Holzdorfer and is still in possession of the Holzdorfer family.
When it opened in 1955 it was known as 'Geistermühle' (Ghost Mill). At that time, it featured a mill on the left hand side. In the winter of 1957 to 1958, it was 'restored' to resemble a Geisterschloss again. The exterior has underwent many changed over the years. In 1985 the large gorilla (manufactured by the German Hofmann Figuren) was added. When the gorilla was destroyed in a fire in 2002, an almost exact copy was put back in its place.
The ride has 2 ticket booths which are no longer in use (the ride is payed for in the station). An animatronic was put inside the large ticket booth in front of the ride.
