Today marks the grand opening of the long-awaited indoor roller coaster Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in Walt Disney World’s Epcot (FL, U.S.A.). The brand new ride has already seen soft openings and previews over the last week, during which the first onride videos and reviews were already posted. From today onwards however, all park guests are invited to ride as well. Along with the opening of the ride, a series of ride-based merchendise is released.

Opening days for such a major new Dinsey ride used to be characterized by large crowds and long queue lines. Today, however, is much different, as Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind does not feature any stand-by queue line. The large crowds gather at 7AM in the My Disney Experience-app to obtain their virtual queue access. So no pictures of enormous crowds at Epcot today, but instead Twitter is full of screenshots of so-called ‘boarding groups’ in which the ones lucky enough to obtain their queue pass were divided.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is based on the popular Guardians of the Galaxy-film franchise by Marvel. During the experience, visitors are asked to join a ship of Nova Corps to travel to the planet of Xandar. To reach the planet, the ship needs to use a Cosmic Generator that can create portals in space. However, visitors will soon find out that the generator is stolen by a super villain that wants to erase the Nova Corps from time. Riders are asked to join the Guardians of the Galaxy on a quest through the galaxy and retrieve the Cosmic Generator.

The new roller coaster is constructed by Vekoma and uses a unique ride system enabling the vehicles to spin both controlled and uncontrolled. Apart from spinning vehicles, the ride contains on-board soundtrack. Six different tracks were used, each from well-known 70’s and 80’s-hits, to create six different soundtracks of which one is played randomly throughout the ride.
